Dr. Ayisha Zakia Jefferson

Advancing Black Leadership, Beauty Ideology, Identity, and Cultural Memory

Dr. Ayisha Zakia Jefferson is an Assistant Professor, qualitative researcher, and educator whose work explores the intersections of Black leadership, beauty ideology, identity, and cultural memory. Guided by the belief that education is more than the transfer of knowledge, she views scholarship as a pathway for reclaiming identity, preserving history, and cultivating transformative learning experiences that strengthen individuals and communities.

With more than twenty years of experience in higher education, Dr. Jefferson has dedicated her career to teaching, research, curriculum development, mentoring, and educational programming. Her work bridges scholarship and community engagement by creating spaces where dialogue, reflection, and critical inquiry encourage people to examine how history, culture, and lived experiences shape leadership, self-perception, and collective memory.

Her research centers on the lived experiences of Black women and the ways beauty ideology, cultural narratives, and historical memory influence identity, leadership, and belonging. She is especially interested in how scholarship can contribute to healing, empowerment, and transformational learning within Black communities.

Dr. Jefferson earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Bennett College and both her Master of Arts in African American Literature and her Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership Studies and Adult Education, with a concentration in African American Leadership, from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. As a proud graduate of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, she credits these institutions with shaping both her scholarship and her lifelong commitment to advancing Black education, leadership, and cultural preservation.

Her dissertation, The Veil of Black Beauty: A Phenomenological Study on Black Woman Leadership, examined how beauty ideology influences the identities and leadership experiences of Black women. This work continues to inform her broader research agenda exploring Black leadership, identity development, beauty ideology, and cultural memory.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Jefferson develops educational programming, facilitates workshops, and engages communities in conversations that encourage reflection, learning, and personal transformation. Through Our Beauty Matters, an educational initiative, she creates opportunities for dialogue surrounding Black beauty ideology, identity, leadership, healing, and cultural empowerment. Her workshops and presentations invite participants to critically examine inherited narratives while cultivating a deeper appreciation for the richness and complexity of Black experiences.

Throughout her career, Dr. Jefferson has served as a keynote presenter, workshop facilitator, invited lecturer, panelist, podcast guest, and national and international conference presenter. She has presented her scholarship and educational programming at universities, professional conferences, and community organizations throughout the United States and internationally, including presentations in Barcelona, Spain.

Committed to lifelong learning, Dr. Jefferson continues to expand her scholarship through interdisciplinary study and professional development. Her educational preparation includes advanced training in qualitative research, leadership development, culturally responsive education, trauma-informed approaches, Writing to Heal through Duke University, African Traditional Religious Studies, and, most recently, the Google AI Essentials Certificate, reflecting her commitment to thoughtfully integrating emerging technologies into education and research.

At the heart of Dr. Ayisha Zakia Jefferson's work is a simple but enduring belief: that storytelling, education, and scholarship have the power not only to preserve history, but also to help individuals and communities reclaim identity, imagine new possibilities, and contribute to a more just and compassionate future.
